Development of low pH cement systems forming magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H)
Creation of a novel cement with moderate pH to encapsulate reactive metals incorporated in nuclear wastes. Further work (Ceram.Engineering&Science Proceedings(CESP 32[9], 2011) showed that aluminium and magnesium encapsulated in this cement hardly corrode and could remain stable for very long time. Mechanical properties are comparable to Portland cement and waste products can be used as main cement component. A proposal on this cement was placed second in the Armourers and Brasiers Venture prize 2011, follow-on work via £165k UK-France MOD grant with Microturbo (F) and a collaboration with Dalian University of Technology (CN) is being set up.
