Additional information

A new eigenstrain technique using electon-backscattered-diffraction(EBSD) measurements at the free surface is developed to determine microstructure-level residual stresses at subsurface fatigue nucleation sites (eg inclusions). It presents the first application of the eigenstrain method to microstructure-level residual stress, and for a given problem class, overcomes the 2D surface measurement limitation of EBSD for some key 3D problems (eg sub-surface fatigue crack nucleation) in non-destructive evaluation for component structural integrity. Presented as a keynote lecture at the 21st Computational Materials Modelling Workshop, Ireland, 2011.
