This journal article conceived by Crawshaw as principal author/editor and co-authored with post-doctoral research officer Fowler was one output of the AHRC-funded Moving Manchester Project http://www.transculturalwriting.com/movingmanchester/ . The theoretical investigation into the relationship between literature and social change was developed by Crawshaw and applied by him to readings from a text by one of the authors participating in the project. Fowler had previously interviewed the author as part of the project and had published a paper on him, though from an entirely different perspective.
