Additional information
The mechanism by which the martensite reaction is influenced by the parent austenite grain size has been revealed quantitatively, making it possible to rationalize all previous published data in a single model. This highly cited model was developed for the common martensitic transformation (alpha) in steels, but we have since shown it can be applied without modification to the epsilon transformation [CALPHAD 36(2012)16-22]. It has led us to a complete and validated theory for martensitic transformation [ISIJ International 52(2012)164-166], which takes austenite grain size, stress, plastic strain and mechanical stabilization into account.
