Significance of output:

Contains simulations of flow along a section of a sonar array. Noise generated by fluctuations in pressure from turbulence in the flow interferes with the operation of these devices. The simulations show that this noise increases as the diameter of the array decreases, in agreement with experiments, and that the strength of the turbulent noise does not peak until the arrays are very small (diameter approximately that of a human hair). Hence decreasing the weigh of these heavy (around 30 ton) devices by significantly decreasing their size, as has been mooted, is not a viable option.
