Anaerobic co-digestion of mechanically biologically treated municipal waste with primary sewage sludge: a feasibility study
Both Sewage Sludge from wastewater treatment and solid waste output from Mechanical Biological treatment processes, represent problem waste streams. The research explored if these waste streams could be anaerobically co-digested, and hence utilise well-established technologies used by the water industry. The laboratory results suggest an increase in gas yield could be achieved, but that heavy metals in the final digestate remained a concern. Our partner in the tests was Scottish Water, who used the research to inform their decisions in an investment into a new food and organic digestion plant in Cumbernauld.
