A series of performances and papers collectively represent my investigation into collaborative performance-making. In the performance experiments I have established various collaborative 'set-ups' (in the Lyotardian sense) with artists and musicians, ranging from live improvisation to a rehearsed studio piece. The overriding artistic question for these projects is how drawing, movement and sound might co-exist in the same space, with equal importance.

Investigating these questions in 2010, I performed an improvised work as part of the group exhibition Tanz auf dem Vulkan, Kunstarkaden Munich. Here I performed in response to a large charcoal wall drawing by artist Christoph Lammers, alongside a soundscape by Simjon Spengler. A similar set-up was created for UniCredit Kunstraum, Munich, December 2011.

For Spontaneous Combustion as part of CARPA, Helsinki, Nick Franglen (sound), Christoph Lammers (visual artist) and (movement), worked to develop an accumulative improvisation throughout a day. The recorded event is available as part of the CARPA proceedings, alongside an article exploring questions around intuitive decision-making processes in the performance event.

Lichtspur was a commission by St Paul Munich, as part of the festival Lange Nacht der Musik. In a large church setting, a live exploration saw Lammers’ wall drawing, my movement work and sound by church musicians evolving in relation to each other over six hours.

Spontaneous Combustion was a performance experiment between artist Gary Wragg, musician Nick Franglen and myself, in which we composed a short studio piece from fragments of drawing, sound and movement that had been created in response to each other’s work, and shared remotely.

The research of this performance series has been framed by my co-curation of two symposia On Collaboration, as part of which I presented a paper drawing together these experiences and exploring issues around creative decision-making processes in collaborative practice.
