Double-weighted statement

This book, described by reviewer Guy Cook, as marking ‘a major step forward for both discourse analysis and corpus linguistics’, pioneers the development of a new research area in applied linguistics: multimodal corpus-based discourse analysis. This includes the introduction of a novel methodological approach to the analysis of relationships between language and gesture-in-use based on large-scale real-life records of interaction (marking a significant movement from traditional approaches to the analysis of text-based corpora). This approach required extensive, time-consuming data analysis and the development of a highly complex methodology which could not have been reported in a journal article length output.
