Additional information

A commentary article by Reeder and Knight in the same issue of Nature Methods (Nat. Methods, 2009, 6(9): 636-637) described this work as a "breakthrough" in accurately determining microbial diversity. This work resulted from Davenport's RCUK Academic Fellowship (EP/E500501/1) and helped provide credence for his successful EPSRC Challenging Engineering award (EP/I025782/1), the purchase of the only personal genome sequencer in any UK environmental engineering group, and its use to support the water industry (EPSRC IDC STREAM; EP/G037094/1).
