Digital Resource and Database of Palaeography, Manuscripts and Diplomatic [DigiPal]
Stokes was Principal Investigator and Project Director. he developed the project's research questions, methodology and rationale, all of which derive directly from two of his earlier publications, 'Computer-Aided Palaeography' and 'Palaeography and the "Virtual Library" of Manuscripts'. He is principally responsible for the new model of medieval manuscripts and especially handwriting (for which see his articles, 'Describing Handwriting', 'Modeling Medieval Handwriting', and 'Palaeography and Image Processing'). He also contributed most of the current database content, including the description of approximately 500 scribal hands and about 200 manuscripts or charters. He has also analysed some of this data which has resulted in new knowledge and understanding of medieval script (for which see especially conference papers 'Rule and Variation in English Vernacular Minuscule', which has been invited for publication in a volume of Utrecht Studies in Medieval Literacy. http://www.digipal.eu/
