Radio City – for Trombone, Narrator and Brass Band
Radio City was premiered by Brett Baker (trombone), Dale Gerrard (narrator) and the Black Dyke Band (conductor Robert Childs) at the RNCM Festival of Brass on January 25 2013. The premiere was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 (Afternoon on 3) as part of the series “British Symphonies and Brass Bands” on June 17 2013. The significance of this decision, to place the work within a programme of symphonic literature perhaps reflects a recognition of a stream of brass band repertoire within “serious” art music.
Radio City is an pioneering music theatre piece for brass band and narrator, ideally complete with set design and an actor as narrator. This is new territory for brass bands, and alongside work by Dewhurst in this submission, represents a significant innovation in the format of performance in the medium.
Musically, the sound world of Radio City is captured by the use of jazz styles with influences ranging from Dorsey through Ellington to the bluegrass fiddle tradition in the finale.
