Additional information

Applying existing linear pole placement control methods to nonlinear systems is now possible by using a new linearization methodology that approximates nonlinear systems in a global way by a sequence of linear time-varying equations. A new time-varying approach to nonlinear exponential stability via eigenvalue placement is introduced and its convergence properties are established. The method is currently been studied on a challenging application, the control of large containers’ automatic storage on ship’s decks, where natural external disturbances such as shore winds and tidal effects, and their very heavy weight make the manual manageability of large containers difficult.
