Component mode synthesis as a framework for uncertainty analysis
Significance of output:
Numerical predictions, typically Finite Element, involve large numerical calculations with hundreds if not millions of degrees of freedom. Solving a dynamic model more than once is expensive in resources and time, but often there is interest in the variability of the response over an ensemble of slightly different representations such as for cars due to manufacturing tolerances, material variability, etc. Alternatives presented enables uncertainty and variability to be introduced at a component level, and predictions extended to the complete system. This can then be propagated using statistical or fuzzy descriptions to the local and global response predictions.
