Significance of output:

Photonic crystals (PhCs) can provide special optical effects which can be exploited for a large range of engineering applications, such as fibre telecommunications, optical computing, and next-generation solar cells. Its market is estimated close to $1trillion by 2015 (OITDA, Japan). The modelling and fabrication of complex micro-scale PhCs are challenging due to their small length scales. In this paper, a mesh-free particle method suitable for small scale modelling has been developed for enhancing PhCs modelling, and alleviates the shortcomings of the traditional mesh-based methods (FEM, FDM). This research has been supported by the Microsoft Institute for HPC (Dr. Newberry, micheal.newberry@microsoft.com).
