Characterization of Solid-State Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Utilizing High Absorption Coefficient Metal-Free Organic Dyes
Metal-free organic dyes are of considerable interest in the manufacture of cheap dye sensitized solar cells, to replace expensive (£250/g) ruthenium based dyes. This experimental/computational study provides a first detailed picture of the electronic properties of the dye to titanium dioxide interface. This led to a paradigm shift in dye sensitized solar cell research since it was the first to strongly question the importance of the dye surface dipole moment on performance. It spawned further research worldwide (see DOI: 10.1002/ejoc.200900236), which in turn has increased the potential for commercial exploitation.
