Additional information

The use of an experimentally determined parameter was demonstrated here to be an unreliable indicator of Glass Forming Ability (GFA) of Bulk Metallic Glasses. Small substitutions of Si and Y provided a scavenging effect, reducing oxides (which act as potent nucleation sites) thereby enhancing the GFA. Industrial implications are being explored in relation to nanostructured steels with Tata (david.hanlon@tata.com). This paper was a runner-up in the James Clarke Maxwell prize for the journal in 2009.
