Facile synthesis of well-defined hydrophilic methacrylic macromonomers using ATRP and click chemistry
This paper demonstrated the versatility and complementary nature of two vibrant processes in polymer science (ATRP and click chemistry) by producing macromonomers of nine different polymeric materials for the first time. The work showed that a number of different classes of polymers could be efficiently converted into more useful materials using a new approach. Since its publication in 2008, the work has inspired many others to adopt the approach (e.g. to create biodegradable, injectable hydrogels; DOI:10.1002/pola.25874). This work, directed and carried out at Aston, was done in collaboration with the large polymer science group at the University of Sheffield.
