A membrane screening for the separation/concentration of dilignols and trilignols from solvent extracts
The work successfully demonstrated the feasibility of extracting industrially relevant compounds including vanillin and ferulic acid from the solvent phase from a controlled novel biological degradation process. Of particular importance, was demonstrating it was possible, via existing filtration technology, to extract and concentrate desired compounds by a factor of 10 compared to the state of the art, which provides both environmental (e.g. energy input) and economic benefits. The newly funded £3.1M EPSRC project (CL4W, EP/K026216/1) builds upon this work, focussing upon industrial scale reclamation of valuable metals/chemical compounds via phytoremediation and application of the biodegradation and filtration approaches developed here.
