Additional information

This reports the world’s first demonstration of an “opto-electrode” for simultaneous optical imaging and EEG of brain activity. Integrating optical fibre bundles within EEG electrodes enables both modalities to be utilized simultaneously without compromising the area sampled on the scalp. For the first time, it is possible to conduct optical imaging of cerebral haemodynamics during full-scalp clinical EEG on newborn infants. The design is fully compatible with clinical EEG systems, and has potential for commercialization. Further evaluation is being funded by Action Medical Research (£131K). I am head of group and designed the probe with my PhD student (first author).
