This work reports a first Watt level emission from a fibre laser in mid-infrared region, funded by EPSRC and ARC collaborative projects between Aston and the University of Sydney. This work has been cited by a Nature Photonics review article (Nature Photonics 6, 423–431(2012)) as a significant milestone for high power mid-infrared fibre lasers, and included in a new book “Fiber lasers” (ISBN 978-3-527-41114-6 - Wiley-VCH, Berlin,pp. 235). Such high power CW mid-infrared fibre lasers are important tools for applications in military, remote sensing, surgery and spectroscopy.
