Digital back-propagation for spectrally efficient WDM 112 Gbit/s PM m-ary QAM transmission
This world-first study of digital compensation of nonlinear transmission impairments for high order modulation formats not only paved the way for the use of such high order formats in ultra-long transmission systems but also revealed that the penalty is independent of the modulation format. Commercial systems, such as Ciena’s Wavelogic series employ similar nonlinearity compensators. Knowledge gained from this activity currently informs the EPSRC programme grant UNLOC (£4.8M). The paper enabled the verification of recent capacity limit calculations and established a practical upper limit to performance, enabling hardware and design rules optimisation.
