Additional information

Start of a series of papers exploring the applications of long period gratings in different fibre designs, in this case photonic crystal fibre. The research on bend sensors has led to application in cardio-respiratory monitoring leading to collaboration with the Vinca Institute (Belgrade) and the formation of a spin-off company (Diasens d.o.o. - contact Ljupco Hadzievski ljupcoh@vinca.rs), which was a recent winner in the Balkan Venture Forum (http://www.balkanventureforum.org/2012/11/26/award-winners-bkvf-belgrade-2012/). Patent application reflecting the ability of these sensors to detect mechanical cardiac activity as well as respiration (P-2012/0373), now at PCT stage.
