This 215,000-word book took shape over twelve years, and most of the underlying research was carried out within the AHRC Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music (2004-09), of which Cook was Director. By critiquing fundamental aspects of musicological conceptualisation, it proposes a major paradigm shift within the discipline.
