It is proposed that this monograph be double-weighted. It incorporates the results of research conducted over an eleven year period in areas as diverse as the Scottish Enlightenment, English plebeian radicalism, Scottish Romanticism, English Romantic cultural studies, cultural theory, and British periodical history. The book can therefore be said to have taken up the time and intellectual space of at least two normal items.
