An energy-efficient error correction scheme for IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor networks
Significance of output:
For the first time, this paper demonstrates that the powerful turbo principle can be introduced into the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor network standard, without reducing its transmission rate. Using measurements taken from hardware implementation, this approach is shown to offer a 30% reduction in the overall energy consumption of wireless sensor nodes. The work led to EPSRC grants EP/J015520/1 (£316,040) and EP/L010550/1 (£480,201) in collaboration with ARM, BT, Nokia Siemens Networks and Cambridge Silicon Radio. Additionally, Altera has provided €75,000 of PhD funding to develop soft-IP for commercialisation.
