'Christmas in Nineteenth-Century England' is adapted from Neil Armstrong’s doctoral thesis, and is based on extensive research utilising contemporary periodicals, national and local newspapers, private family papers, published memoirs and the records of charities, institutions and religious denominations. It is a longue durée study covering a period of more than one hundred years. The book makes a contribution to several sub-fields of historiography, including the history of the family, childhood, philanthropy, consumerism and civic culture. It has been well reviewed in major publications including History Today and the Times Higher Education Supplement.
