Additional information

The first unambiguous evidence that grain refinement in Ti44Al8Nb1B and similar alloys is through boride assisted beta-to-alpha solid phase transformation rather than during solidification, contrary to various previous mechanisms proposed over the last 15 years. This work was a collaboration with Rolls-Royce plc and ACCESS in Germany. It was sponsored by EPSRC through the Strategic Partnership (mark.dixon@rolls-royce.com). It also led to a PhD studentship on the stability of borides in TiAl alloys funded by Rolls-Royce plc. This paper is also cited in impact case study 3b 1.
