Spatial correlation of heat release rate and sound emission from turbulent premixed flames
This work is part of a TSB national funded project aiming at reducing noise emission from aeroengines. Noise due to unsteady combustion is an important noise source particularly for lean burn gas turbines which is the way forward for environmentally friendly engines with reduced emissions. This work uses DNS data to establish a new theoretical model for predicting noise emitted from open flames, and has verified the model with previous experimental data. Future work is being carried out in collaboration with Rolls-Royce to extend the model to predict combustion noise from realistic gas turbines.
