Investigation of the thermal decomposition and flammability of PEEK and its carbon and glass-fibre composites
The importance of PEEK to the aviation industry is highlighted by our co-authors, leading flammability experts from the Federal Aviation Administration. As a lightweight metal replacement, the burning behaviour must be characterized for safe use in aircraft, and other high-risk applications. The burning behavior of the pure polymer is profoundly different to materials reinforced with either glass or carbon fibre, which increase the strength and rigidity of the composite, but have notably different effects on its burning behaviour. The carbon-fibre reinforced material has a longer time to ignition, but more of the polymer burns, than the glass-fibre reinforced material.
