The tale of the eloquent peasant : a reader's commentary
This is a 206,000-word commentary on one of the longest poems from the Middle Kingdom, drawing on teaching at Oxford, Göttingen and Köln, and on a close examination of the manuscripts in Berlin. An introduction covers issues of composition and reception in the Middle Kingdom; language and imagery; naturalism, artifice and immediacy; cultural themes; and reception. The commentary presents the text in transliteration and translation with line-by-line discussion of points of philology, lexicography, style, intertext, context, and meaning. The book complements the existing text edition of the poem and the new photographic publications of the main manuscripts by the author.
