Additional information

This paper details the process of analysis by a series of research questions: How do Zilcer’s categories of classification for music’s engagement with painting relate to this particular problem of translation and interpretation? What are the problems associated with the analysis, translation and interpretation of the musical score into a visual format, suitable for two and three-dimensional composition using painting practice and alternative media. The remaining question relates to the use of gallery Oldham’s permanent collection of British Systems Art and the problems associated with staging a visual music event as either a gallery installation, performance environment or public venue.
