The mood board process modeled and understood as a qualitative design research tool
The creation of mood boards involves a recognisable process coupled with creativity. Little academic research on mood boards exists. This study explores and models this process uncovering the underlying principles in relation to working methodologies and problem solving theories. The paper puts forward a strong case for participants to create mood boards with more awareness and deep levels of engagement throughout. This will better benefit the quality of resulting design ideas and end-products.The study used in-depth observation studies employing visual, verbal and sensational-emotional interpretations and a think aloud method using 19 participants and the model tested using 126 questionnaire respondents.
