Additional information
Morris’s second adult for young adults resisted the pressure for a direct sequel to expand on her interests in revealing the layers of history – and its moral and social burdens – present, yet often almost invisible, in any city. As in all Morris’ work for young adults, subversion of the urban fantasy genre (prioritising historical investigation over romantic plot, and embedding contemporary mystery in the factual past) is essential to the formation of the story; as in Ruined, the geographic and psychic displacement of characters contributes to the central narrative of her work, an exploration of identity, loss and reinvention.
