English abstract

This chapter analyses various facets of strategic command in the First World War. After offering definitions and examining the 19th century background, it analyses matters such as the relationship of strategic to operational command; the political/military interface; strategic command in coalition warfare; the rise of civilian warlords; the emergence of ‘war managers’ in a total conflict; and the importance of communications in shaping strategic command. It contains a number of short studies of the realities of high-level, including a comparison of the effectiveness of French and German strategic commanders in the 1914 Marne campaign.
