Additional information

This paper is the result of an international collaboration, led by Environment Canada, on the study of various types of fog using a range of different instruments, including image processing. The image processing work has been commercialised via a spin-out company, Dmist Research Ltd, which offers a real-time image enhancement product (www.dmist.com). The paper has informed work elsewhere, e.g. in connection with the prediction of fog (http://dx.doi.org/10.1175/2009WAF2222289.1,) and in the analysis of extremely dense fog events (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.atmosres.2009.11.006). The technology has also been incorporated in a commercial camera assembly for use on UK motorways (contact details available).
