Additional information

Doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) have been seen as requiring less power electronics than full converter generators in wind turbine applications. Because of cost, most wind turbines until fairly recently have therefore tended to use DFIGs. This paper showed that when grid fault performance is considered in addition to steady-state behaviour, DFIG rating starts to approach full converter rating so the benefit is marginal. The results have been used by, amongst others, researchers in Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya, Spain (DOI: 10.1109/TEC.2011.2160397), University College Dublin, Ireland (DOI:10.1109/TEC.2010.2050485), National Institute of Technology Surat, India (DOI:10.1016/j.ijepes.2012.11.020), and in Siemens-sponsored research (contact details available).
