Additional information

Holding an islanded power network in virtual synchrony with the main utility grid is not presently allowed on a public utility network. However, when this is permitted, dispersed generators may maintain supply when the grid supply is lost. If the generators are renewable-sourced, this technique will help satisfy EU CO2 reduction targets. This paper helped establish the concept of virtual synchronised islands, and led to further research in Bologna (DOI: 10.1109/TSG.2010.2094213) and Washington State Universities (DOI: 10.1109/JPROC.2011.2116110). The PhD students (Best and Laverty) who jointly wrote the paper are now lecturers at Queen's University Belfast.
