Mass spectrometers are traditionally used for detecting trace quantities of gas from reactive systems but suffer from many disadvantages. This is the first time that an all optical method involving cw quantum cascade lasers has been used for enhanced reaction monitoring for an industrially relevant catalytic reaction. This lower cost, more portable, more sensitive solution has been used by one research group and the technology is being transferred to the SME TDL Sensors Ltd (www.tdlsensors.co.uk).
