Coherent ultrasonic Doppler tomography
We believe that, together with colleagues in Bristol, we are the only group developing ultrasonic Doppler tomography, with the primary objective of breast imaging for cancer detection. This paper reports the results which we have obtained using coherent detection, which theoretically could achieve sufficient spatial resolution to image microcalcifications (which can seldom be seen on traditional ultrasonic B-scans); because they are associated with malignancy, this will accelerate the patient pathway. The next step will be to construct a scanner for clinical evaluation. The work was supported by a grant from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
