Additional information

<12> This paper is concerned with the robustness of large scale, distributed computing systems. It takes nature inspired approaches, viewing systems as dynamic, evolving entities: Variety (degeneracy) is the key to robust structure in nature; distributed redundancy performs the same role in computational systems. The originality is in applying metrics to optimise network performance with outcome measured by distributed redundancy. The approach is rigorously analysed and shown to outperform relevant existing techniques. The work has international impact being used for optimising system resilience, including disaster scenarios, and was a founding research contribution to an international community of degeneracy researchers.
