This paper was an outcome of an international research collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (http://www.ntnu.no/imt/lab/kybernetikk, Contact: Thor Fossen, Thor.Fosse@itk.ntnu.nor ) investigating the use of Genetic Algorithms for optimising the performance of control systems for ship manoeuvring, involving the comparison of different types of genetic operators for controller optimisation. The paper identifies the best combination of techniques and provides guidelines for developing efficient Genetic Algorithm based optimisation heuristics.
