A toolset of waveguide elements is examined which can be combined to produce polarization-sensitive functional devices in a single contiguous waveguide. In particular, waveguide implementations of an optical isolator and a polarization modulator are developed. Elements of this paper were presented by invitation at the 2010 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting (Boston, USA - DOI: 10.1557/opl.2011.337), and led to a patent submission (PCT/GB2012/050519). The work described has also resulted in an international collaborative award under the Materials World Network programme with partner the University of Minnesota, supported jointly by EPSRC (EP/J018708/1 £307k) and NSF (DMR-1210818).
