Additional information

In contrast to the paradigm that denitrification is an exclusively anaerobic process, this paper provides evidence for high rates of aerobic denitrification in permeable sediments of the German Wadden Sea. This is the first experimental evidence for such a phenomenon. This work was carried out in collaboration with Prof Marcel Kuypers at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Marine Microbiology, Bremen. It indicates that O2 might not act as an exclusive control of N2 production in marine sediments. The findings are the basis of further investigations in collaboration with the MPI and Dr Hang Gao at Tongji University, Shanghai (e.g. DOI: 10.4319/lo.2012.57.1.0185).
