Additional information

This paper reports a wholly novel technique for cell tracking. Current approaches try to identify the whole cell, we adopt 'moving light display' techniques from CGI in which an object is tracked by points of light. We employ this on the nanoscale using quantum dot labelling of intracellular vesicles. This is a radical departure in biological imaging allowing image analysis of 2-bit data sets of binary maps and complete automation of cell identification and tracking in populations > 10e4 cells. The work was funded by EPSRC Basic Technology Grant - Intracellular Biophotonic Nanoswitches, EP/F040954/1.
