A computational study of supersonic disk-gap-band parachutes using Large-Eddy Simulation coupled to a structural membrane
Based on the results of this paper, large scale computations were for the first time able to predict the Mach number dependent instability of parachutes (JPL/NASA funded project, programme manager at JPL Dr Anita Sengupta, ID_in_audit_file@jpl.nasa.gov). In space exploration missions, supersonic parachutes are used for descent into low-density atmospheres, like on Mars. As a result of this success, Dr Cirak has a consulting agreement with Vorticity Ltd., Oxfordshire (ID_in_audit_file@vorticity-systems.com) to provide computational support for their parachute projects with European Space Agency.
