Luxury or 'lock-in' ? An exploration of unsustainable consumption in the UK: 1968 to 2000
This paper reported on an early stage in the programme of work – further developed in the ESRC REsearch group on Lifestyles Values and Environment (RESOLVE) – that established consumption-based accounts of environmental impacts in the UK, using input output analysis. This paper also provided clear links between the evolution of economic and technical variables and the underlying sociology and psychology of consumption. Such multi-disciplinarity was unprecedented internationally prior to the establishment of RESOLVE – which later became a flagship programme under UNEP’s international work on sustainable consumption and production.
