A novel 3-D power Doppler ultrasound approach to the quantification of Achilles tendon neovascularity
Previous to this paper there had been no Doppler ultrasound based technique that accounted for the pulsatile nature of the blood vessels. This has a profound consequence when reviewing the Doppler ultrasound literature as it cannot be established if it is maximum blood flow being reported. This paper reports a novel technique to standardising blood volume measurement to the systolic component of the cardiac cycle which corresponds to maximum blood flow. It is suggested that future Doppler ultrasound investigations should take blood volume measurement in the systolic phase of the cardiac cycle so direct comparison of results could justified between studies.
