Damping of torsional vibrations in a variable-speed wind turbine
Damping the torsional vibrations of a wind turbine is vital for its reliable operation. If these are not damped, failure of mechanical components may occur with long repair times. This research investigated control algorithms to damp torsional vibrations recognising parameter variations and model uncertainties. The work was used by Nordic Wind Power in the design of a new 1 MW wind turbine (Charles Gamble, crgamble@googlemail.com). This research was presented at two EWEA Conferences (Brussels, 2011 and Copenhagen, 2012). The project was funded by Nordic Wind Power through a PhD studentship (Charles Gamble) with input from GL Garrad Hassan (Ervin.Bossanyi@gl-garradhassan.com).
