This paper presents a radically new approach to the design of stable, energy-preserving digital filter banks for subband coding based on the eigenvalue decomposition of para-Hermitian polynomial matrices. The algorithms produced generate filter banks which offer improved coding gain compared with other benchmark techniques such as the Window Method and Iterative Greedy Algorithm. They were presented in an invited keynote speech at the IMA Mathematics in Signal Processing Conference 2012 (Birmingham).
