Fibroblast growth factor 2 and transforming growth factor β1 induce precocious maturation of articular cartilage
Tissue engineered cartilage is important as a possible treatment for arthritis. Although it is straightforward to grow cartilage cells, it is difficult to produce mature tissue with adequate mechanical properties. In this study we show a method of inducing maturation of cultured cartilage and showed that its mechanical properties are similar to those of mature cartilage. This is a potentially important step towards a tissue engineering treatment for arthritis and in understanding the biology of articular cartilage.
